Working as subconsultant, Lu Engineers performed the structural inspection of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) transfer bridges at the 65th Street Yard in Brooklyn, NY. These two moveable transfer bridges allow rail cars to be loaded and unloaded onto car floats that cross the Upper New York Bay. Lu Engineers inspected and documented the condition of the girder, floorbeam, and stringer superstructure systems, as well as the structural components of the counterweight towers. Inspection concerns included documenting evidence of corrosion, section loss, cracks, concrete deterioration, and other defects. After assessing the bridge elements, inspection personnel assigned condition states with quantities to each element based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Bridge Element Inspection.
