  1. Hello my name is Nathan Smarcz, I recently saw this job posting on Indeed.com and am extremely interested. I am recent graduate of SUNY Geneseo were I received my B.A in the Geological Sciences. At Geneseo I gained a strong knowledge for environmental science and skills in laboratory and in the the field settings where I have experience in taking samples and then analyzing those samples into research projects and other studies. I also had the opportunity to work with ArcGIS and gain a proficiency using that program for geologic and environmental interpretations. I am a driven individual who is looking to start my career as an Environmental Scientist and I know I can be a valued member of any workforce. I am eagerly looking forward to hearing more about the position because it seems like a great opportunity. To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to express keen interest in the Entry Level Environmental Scientist position with Lu Engineers in Rochester, New York. While researching environmental job opportunities related to environmental consulting, field coordination, and analysis, I came across your company. I am interested in joining your team because it would allow me to apply my skills in field work and data analysis with my ability to present findings in an easily comprehendible way, skills I have refined during my four years in college and in my current position.

I am a recent graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. I have studied various environmental issues including, but not limited to: energy, pollution/pollution prevention, and invasive species. Through my Senior Integrative Experience, I learned about soil and water conservation, water quality, and community planning. The ultimate goal for my senior project was to produce a comprehensive database for the Finger Lakes watersheds, incorporating information from several stakeholder organizations focused on improving/protecting the water quality of the Finger Lakes. Through this project, I honed my abilities to connect with the right people to get the data I needed, to analyze the data, and to organize data in a way that can be utilized by each of the 42 stakeholders. This database includes information about each stakeholder’s funding opportunities, organizational projects, and educational projects. In addition, I helped create public awareness of each stakeholder organization and the various water quality issues facing the Finger Lakes by participating in my school’s senior symposium, which was open to the public.

I am a motivated self-starter who is passionate about environmental issues. In my free time, I volunteered on the school’s research vessel to gather samples for Professor John Halfman’s research into the water quality of Seneca Lake. This project evaluates weekly salinity, turbidity, and nutrient (phosphate and nitrate) levels as well as algal populations. In addition to surface water sampling, I helped Professor Halfman gather and analyze drone photography for a correlation between the different colors of the lake captured in photos to harmful algal blooms. I have experience doing other field work such as delineations, and invasive species sampling.

My most recent work experience is with Normandeau Associates where I work with a microscope to sort fish eggs and larvae, perform quality control checks, and calculate the total number of each organism present in each sample. I have learned how to work under strict deadlines to meet requests from our clients, efficiently communicate my findings with my team and supervisor, be detailed in my work, and to properly handle harmful chemicals for preserving samples.

I believe that the combination of my experience and coursework enables me to bring value to this position. I look forward to speaking with you further regarding this job opportunity and my qualifications. I can be reached by phone at (603) 343-7370 or via e-mail at phoebe.rafferty@gmail.com. Thank you for your time and consideration.
